It defines the scope and requirements for veterinarians practicing telehealth, including the establishment of a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, prescribing certain medications, and maintaining patient records. The bill also grants the Board of Veterinary Medicine jurisdiction over veterinarians practicing telehealth, regardless of their physical location. Additionally, the bill clarifies the definition of "records owner" for veterinary medical patient records.
Telehealth involves the use of electronic video and audio communications to enable telehealth veterinarians to help you navigate your pet’s health issues remotely. As with any medical exam or procedure, there are potential risks associated with the use of telehealth. These risks include, but may not be limited to:
- In rare cases, information transmitted by a pet owner may not be sufficient (e.g. poor photo resolution or slow wifi) to allow our telehealth veterinarians and/or telehealth staff to appropriately assess your pet. As such, a delay in medical evaluation or treatment could occur.
- In rare cases, a lack of access to complete medical records may result in adverse drug interactions or allergic reactions or other judgment errors.
- In rare instances, security protocols could fail, causing a breach of privacy of personal medical information.
